PASAY CITY — The Province of Samar delivered a vibrant showcase of culture, cuisine, and creativity during its featured participation in the Food Wednesdates series of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), held at the Likhaang Filipino.

The event opened with captivating performances from the Manaragat Festival, bringing to life Samar’s coastal heritage through dynamic local dances that celebrated the province’s deep connection to the sea and its people.

A highlight of the program was the live food demonstration, where Samar proudly presented two of its iconic delicacies, Tamalos and Bola Catalana. The showcase not only emphasized traditional cooking techniques but also reinforced the province’s commitment to preserving its culinary heritage.

Further elevating the presentation, Provincial Tourism Officer Mario Piczon introduced the Samar brand, articulating its vision of positioning the province as a hub of culture-driven development through products, storytelling, and identity-building.

Adding depth to the narrative, Clang Garcia shared the journey behind the documentation of Secret Kitchens of Samar, a globally recognized culinary book series that captures the richness and diversity of Samarnon food traditions. Her presentation underscored the importance of documentation in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.

NCCA Chair Eric B. Zerrudo delivered an inspirational message, reflecting on his early involvement in Samar’s cultural initiatives, from cultural mapping efforts to the eventual utilization and promotion of local heritage assets. He commended the province for transforming cultural data into meaningful programs and sustainable development pathways.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) expressed admiration for Secret Kitchens of Samar, noting its strong cultural foundation and market potential. The official also conveyed commitment to support Samar in expanding its reach through trade and exhibition platforms.

The event reinforced Samar’s growing position as a leader in culture-based tourism and creative economy development, showcasing how heritage, food, and storytelling can come together to create a compelling and globally competitive identity under the Spark Samar banner.
