The Province of Samar, through the Provincial Youth Development Office, officially opened the 2025 YES Fair & Samar Book Fiesta with the theme, โ€œPista ng Hirayaโ€ on August 8 at the Samar Convention Center.
Bursting with color and creativity, the fair brought together youth, students, and teachers for a two-day celebration of imagination and learning. Visitors explored an inspiring mix of activities from engaging book talks, dynamic storytelling sessions, and hands-on art workshops, to a cooking demonstration.

The opening ceremony was highlighted by an inspiring keynote message from Dr. Rex Bacarra, an award-winning educator, international speaker, and proud Samarnon. Drawing from his own story, Dr. Bacarra shared how reading shaped his path and brought him closer to his dreams.
โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid to take risks. Never ever be comfortable. Go where discomfort is, because it will give you lessons in life,โ€ he said.
โ€œBooks will really help you a lot. Reading will help you become better versions of yourselves. Thatโ€™s why, donโ€™t be lazyโ€”read, read, read,โ€ he added.
He also reminded young Samarnons to believe in their potential and always strive for excellence.

As part of the opening activities, guests also enjoyed a unique book talk and cooking demo featuring Tamalos, one of Samarโ€™s beloved heirloom recipes. Provincial Tourism Officer Marvin Piczon and Ms. Charo Cinco-Miel shared the importance of preserving food culture as part of local heritage.
The program also included Ms. Tennessee Marie Abaigarโ€™s discussion on the One Values Program, the provinceโ€™s flagship initiative on moral recovery and values formation, a brainchild of Governor Sharee Ann Tan. The program promotes key values such as family, inclusivity, women empowerment, youth and childrenโ€™s welfare, environmental responsibility, and spirituality across all age groups.

Meanwhile, in the Creative Corner, children took part in storytelling sessions, art activities, and other interactive experiences designed to nurture imagination and early literacy.

The celebration will continue with more exciting activities on its second day, including the Sirak Kwiz Bee, where young participants from various schools and municipalities will showcase their knowledge and critical thinking skills. A Coffee Table Discussion on ProtecTeen Program is likewise on schedule. This is a program adopted by the Province of Samar which provides measures to address the root causes of the rising number of teenage pregnancies, as well as protect and promote the rights and well-being of adolescent mothers.

The 2025 YES Fair & Samar Book Fiesta is among the key events under the Tandaya Festival 2025 and Samar Day 2025 celebration, championing the role of youth in nation-building and the importance of nurturing minds at an early age. The initiative also reflects the provinceโ€™s continued commitment to youth development, cultural preservation, and inclusive education.
